Insurance, Covers and Waivers

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)
Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) limits the driver’s liability in the event that the rental car is damaged, subject to the terms of the rental agreement.
Rather than the full cost, the driver is generally only responsible for the first portion, known as their ‘excess’.
This protection applies to all authorised drivers of the rental car.
Third-Party Liability (TPL)
Third-Party Liability (TPL) covers the driver’s liability for damage to any property, excluding the rental car itself. TPL also covers injuries suffered by other people, whether or not they are in the rental car, subject to the terms of the rental agreement.
Theft Protection (TP)
Theft Protection (TP) limits the driver’s liability for costs incurred by the theft of the rental car – or damage incurred by the theft or attempted theft – to an ‘excess’ amount, subject to the terms of the rental agreement. TP does not cover personal effects, which may be covered by the driver’s own travel or household policies.

Personal Accident Insurance (PAI) covers medical and legal costs incurred by bodily injuries resulting from an accident, including death and loss of limb(s), subject to the terms of the rental agreement.
This protection applies to all authorised drivers of the rental car.
Super Collision Damage Waiver (SCDW) reduces the driver’s liability in the event that the rental car is damaged, limiting their legal obligation to pay for repairing or replacing the car, subject to the terms of the rental agreement.
Rather than the full cost, the driver is generally only responsible for the first portion, known as their ‘excess’ – and in many cases, this excess is set at zero, meaning the driver’s liability is waived entirely.
This protection applies to all authorised drivers of the rental car.

Cover Arrangements

Cover Agreements
At the car hire counter, you may decide to buy additional cover to reduce or remove your excess, or to cover things your Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) doesn’t, such as tyres and windscreen.
Please note: if you do, the contract will be between you and the car hire company. Since Rentalcars.com will not be involved at all, we won’t be able to help if you’re dissatisfied with the cost of the policy or the cover it provides.
Please make sure you read the terms and conditions of the cover you receive when signing the rental agreement at pick-up, to find out about the policy’s exclusions and limits.
Policies normally exclude things such as windscreens, glass, wheels, tyres, undercarriage, interior, personal belongings, towing charges & off-road time – as well as any ‘extra equipment’ hired from the car hire company, such as child seats and GPS devices.
Note that your cover will be invalidated by negligence, refuelling errors or breaking the terms of the rental agreement (for example, by driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs).
If extra insurance, or cover is purchased at the car hire counter the deposit amount will be reduced.
Administration Charges

Damage to the car will be charged for by the car hire company after it is dropped off – and will incur a Damage Administration fee on top of the amount deducted from the excess.
An Immobilisation Charge is payable in the event of an accident. This is in addition to the amount deducted from the excess and is compulsory. This charge is calculated against the car group and the number of repair days.

Fuel Policy Options

Full to Full
The car’s fuel tank will be full or part-full at pick-up. At the end of the rental, it should be dropped off with the same amount of fuel.
If it is dropped off with less, the customer will be charged for the missing fuel. The charge for this fuel will depend on the size of the car’s fuel tank and the car hire company’s pricing policy.
The customer will be required to leave a deposit for the fuel – usually in the form of an amount blocked on (rather than removed from) a credit card on signing the rental agreement.
The car hire company may allow or require the customer to pay for fuel at pick-up instead.
